Featured Questions

How can I buy the tests?

You can buy DNA tests from our ONLINE SHOP. To finalize your order, you will have to identify yourself or create a user account with your email and password.

Why do I have to send samples again?

Because the quantity and quality of the extracted DNA have not fulfilled the basic standards required for the correct functioning of the PCR. This occurs more frequently with feathers since the quantity and quality of DNA that is found is variable, not only between species but within the same individual.

Remember, although you can extract DNA from the epithelial cells that remain in the barrel of the feather, it is the small drop of blood that is isolated and dried in the barrel of the feather where the largest quantity of DNA will be found. As a simple rule, it can be concluded that the larger the feather, the better the quality and the higher the amount of DNA  that will be extracted, thereby increasing the probability of PCR success in the laboratory. When the feathers that we receive are too small, or have been cut with scissors, or are dry and degraded, customers will be contacted to request the delivery of a new sample. To avoid further delay in the publication of our results, we will ask customers to resend samples of blood; this ensures a sufficient quantity and quality of DNA to carry out the analysis.

How do I print the registration request for each sample?

All the received samples need to have a registration request that automatically is generated when you register your birds' data. To register your samples, you have to fill in the details of your birds from your account> SEE MY SHIPMENTS AND RESULTS > GET YOUR REQUEST. When you confirm your shipment, you will see a .pdf document that you can download and print. In each application, you will have to attach the corresponding samples for each bird.

When do I receive an analysis kit?

You do not need an analysis kit.

Thanks to the system proposed by SEXADODEAVES, our customers do not have to wait for a kit to prepare their samples. They can be prepared from home, at any time. After purchasing the tests, you can register your shipments online and prepare the samples directly according to the recommendations that you can read in the description of each product.

PREPARATION AND TYPE OF SAMPLES
What kind of samples can I send to the laboratory?

The type of samples you have to send to the laboratory depends on the kind of test you want to send. For sexing by DNA, the laboratory can perform the test from feather or blood samples. For the analysis of diseases, we need blood samples on paper or swab. Thank you for consulting our indicated recommendations for each product. It is important to follow them to ensure that the laboratory can extract DNA from all the samples it receives.

How can I consult the list of optimized species?

You can check the list of optimized species here. If you have any questions about the species of your bird, you can contact us from your personal area or by email to info@sexadodeaves.com

Can the laboratory perform tests for any species of birds?

Before registering your samples, you will have to make sure that the scientific species of your birds are on our list of optimized species. This is essential for the performance of DNA sexing tests. See the list here.

SHIPPING
What is the shipping address of the samples?

Thank you for sending the samples to our laboratory:

HISPALIS BIOLAB

C/ Parsi 9 nº: 12 41016 Polígono Industrial Parsi (Sevilla), Spain.

How do I send the samples to the laboratory?

Once prepared, the samples should be attached to the request forms corresponding to each bird. These forms should then be folded as indicated to protect the samples and placed in an envelope. You can put several folded request forms with their  samples attached within the same envelope without any problem, providing there is no contact between the samples. The samples are now ready to be sent!

What documentation should I send with the samples?

All the samples that we receive need to have a registration request that is automatically is generated when you register your birds' data. When you confirm your shipment, you will see a .pdf document that you can download and print. In each application, you will have to attach the corresponding samples for each bird.

LABORATORY
What is the method of DNA sexing in the laboratory?

The molecular sexing method is based on the result of the amplification of a molecular marker located in the sex chromosomes of birds using the technique of the Polymerase Chain Reaction.

Our laboratory technicians identify a birds sex by using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify the chromo-helicase DNA binding protein (Chromo-Helicase DNA binding region, CHD) and subsequently separating the amplified fragments in agarose gels. The CHD region is characterized by being in the sex chromosomes Z (present in males and females) and W (present only in females) of all bird species. This region differs in its size depending on the chromosome in which it is located, so that the males (ZZ, carrying two copies of the Z chromosome) will show a single band on the agarose gels, while the females (ZW, carriers of both copies) of the sex chromosomes Z and W) will be identified by showing two bands. If you want more information about this, you can find it in this blog post.

How can I contact the laboratory?

To contact our team, you can call us on +34 639 856 118 from Monday to Friday (except holidays) between 9am and 2pm to talk to the customer service Alternatively, send us a message from your account or by email to info@sexadodeaves.com. We will answer as soon as possible!

Why does the laboratory have to repeat the analysis of my sample?

If the sample you have sent us is a feather and you see on your personal page that the analysis is being repeated, it could be due to two main reasons:

1) The technicians have decided to repeat the analyzes and

2) The quantity and/or quality of the extracted DNA was not enough to ensure the amplification of the DNA.

If the sample sent to us is blood and the analysis is being carried out a second or third time, it may be because our technicians want to be sure of the result.

All our diagnoses are collated by two technicians separately; finally, their opinions are contrasted; if there is a discrepancy, in any case, this sample is repeated to dispel doubts.
